How to Install a Dishwasher Under a Granite Countertop

If you own a dishwasher and are having new countertops installed you will have to reinstall the dishwasher anti-tip clips. Anti-tip hardware keeps the dishwasher from tipping forward when the front door is opened and the dishracks are pulled forward either for loading or unloading.

The clips are either attached to the top or the side of the dishwasher. Older and most economy dishwashers are secured to the opening using top mounting clips. These clips are attached to the underside of the countertops using small screws. This works with wood or laminate countertops but not with granite, quartz or solid surface tops. Drilling and attaching screws to these impervious materials is not recommended because of the risk of chipping and cracking the countertop material.

In such cases, it is possible to attach ¾” wide strips of ¼” plywood to the underside of the countertop material. The strips can be attached with either epoxy or silicone caulk. Be sure to clamp the strip in place until the adhesive or silicon is fully cured. Then attach the anti-tip clip to the plywood using screws. Aftermarket dishwasher bars like the Easy Dishwasher Bracket are also available to secure top mounted dishwashers.

Some side mounted units use clips which attach to the side of the dishwasher and are then screwed into the face frame material on either side of the opening. These models have plastic caps on the inside of the door frame which cover holes through which screws can be driven into the opening face frame.

To determine whether your dishwasher is side-mountable please refer to the installation manual that came the unit (installation manuals are also available online).
